Is Shop Pay Available in the UAE? (2026 Update for Shopify Merchants)

Yes — but with a catch. As of mid-2026, Shop Pay is live in the UAE, but only if your store runs on Shopify Plus and you’ve been approved for the new UAE early-access program.

Most merchants on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced plans still can’t use Shopify Payments natively, which means Shop Pay’s one-click checkout and Shop Pay Installments stay out of reach unless you switch platforms or work around it.

Below is the full breakdown of what’s actually live, what’s coming, and what to do today.

What’s Actually Different in 2026

For most of the last decade, the UAE was one of the most challenging places to run a Shopify store. The platform worked, themes worked, apps worked, but Shopify’s native payments processor (and the one-click Shop Pay button that comes with it) was off-limits. Every UAE merchant needed a third-party gateway.

That’s changed twice in the last twelve months:

  1. Winter 2026 Edition opened up Shop Pay Installments in the UAE; the buy-now-pay-later flow is now live, with terms up to 24 months.
  2. The Spring 2026 Edition brought Shopify Payments to the UAE, but only for Shopify Plus merchants, behind a controlled early-access onboarding.

If you’ve been told “you can’t use Shop Pay in the UAE,” that advice is either outdated or only half-right. See the full breakdown of Shopify’s billing mechanics and how Shop Pay fits in in our Shopify Bill Pay and Shopify’s official Payment Flexibility guide for 2026 for the broader market context.

Shop Pay vs. Shopify Payments — What’s the Difference?

This is where most blog posts and even some Shopify reps get confused, so let me make it clean:

ProductWhat it doesUAE status (mid-2026)
Shopify PaymentsThe merchant-facing payment processor. Replaces the need for a third-party gateway like Telr or Stripe.Early access, Shopify Plus only. Application required.
Shop PayThe customer-facing one-click checkout button. Saved cards, saved addresses, one-tap purchase.Works in the UAE when Shopify Payments is active on a Plus store. Not available on stores using third-party gateways.
Shop Pay InstallmentsBNPL customers pay in 2, 4, or up to 24 monthly installments.Available in the UAE for any merchant that has Shop Pay enabled (subject to Shop Pay’s eligibility check). See Shopify’s own BNPL for the mechanics.

If you’re a UAE store on the basic plan, you can use a third-party gateway and accept card payments all day long. Shop Pay itself—that little green button that lets returning customers check out with one tap—you can’t enable it. Not because the UAE is “blocked,” but because Shopify Pay requires Shopify Payments under the hood, and you don’t have that.

So What Does This Mean for Your UAE Store?

Here are the four scenarios you’ll find yourself in, with what to do:

Scenario 1—You’re already a Shopify Plus merchant in the UAE

You’re first in line for the UAE early-access rollout.

  • Log into your Shopify admin
  • Go to Settings → Payments.
  • If you see “Activate Shopify Payments for UAE” as an option, apply. (You’ll be asked for your UAE trade license, Emirates ID, and a UAE-based corporate bank account.)
  • Approval has been running 3–7 business days based on what we’ve seen across clients. (If you’re planning to upgrade to Shopify Plus, check out our Shopify Plus Dubai pricing and onboarding guide.)

Once activated, Shop Pay and Shop Pay Installments turn on automatically — no extra app installation.

Scenario 2—You’re on Shopify Basic, Shopify, or Advanced

Shopify Payments isn’t on the table for you yet. You still need a third-party gateway. Our full breakdown of every gateway we recommend in 2026—fees, approval times, fraud tooling—is in the best payment gateway for Shopify in the UAE guide.

The practical stack we install for UAE clients in 2026 is the following:

  • Telr for local card processing (AED, Apple Pay, Mada, supported UAE-issued cards) — ~2.49% MDR
  • Stripe or Checkout.com for international cards if you sell outside the GCC
  • Tabby and Tamara for BNPL — Tabby typically lifts AOV by 20–40% in our client data

Shop Pay itself stays off-limits here. The workaround most UAE stores use: lean on Apple Pay (which any of the gateways above support) for the one-tap experience, and use Shopify’s accelerated checkout for logged-in customers (different feature, available on all plans) for repeat buyers.

Scenario 3—You sell across the GCC, not just UAE

PayTabs usually wins here — it settles in AED, SAR, EGP, KWD, and other GCC currencies on a single merchant account. Mada coverage for Saudi is mandatory if you’re serious about the Saudi market, and PayTabs handles it natively.

Scenario 4—You’re still planning your launch

Wait two quarters before committing your payment stack. The UAE early-access program is widening — by Q4 2026 we’d expect Shopify Payments to open up to Advanced plan merchants in the UAE, and a few months after that to Basic. If your launch can slip until then, you’ll get Shopify Payments + Shop Pay at the standard rates with no additional work.

How to Apply for Shopify Payments Early Access in UAE

If you’re eligible (Plus plan + UAE trade license + corporate bank account), the application is in your Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Settings → Payments
  2. Click “Activate Shopify Payments”
  3. Select “United Arab Emirates” as your country
  4. Enter the trade license number, Emirates ID, and corporate bank account in AED
  5. Submit — Shopify runs KYC and connects to your bank

Approval times have been 3–7 business days in our experience. If you’re rejected, it’s almost always a documentation issue, not a category restriction. Shopify’s UAE category list is broader than most regions.

Practical Alternatives if You’re Not on Plus

Realistic stack for a non-Plus UAE store in 2026. For the broader comparison framework, see Shopify’s own

6 Best Payment Gateways for Merchants (2026) and their 11 Payment Methods breakdown:

  • Telr—2.49% MDR for local cards, supports Apple Pay, processes in AED, 2–5 day setup
  • PayTabs—2.85% + AED 1, best fraud tooling, GCC-wide coverage including Mada for Saudi
  • Tap Payments — 2.75% + $0.30, fastest onboarding (2–3 days), developer-friendly
  • Checkout.com—for stores doing AED 100k+/month, negotiation room on rates, Apple Pay and Google Pay out of the box

Then layer BNPL on top. For the broader BNPL mechanics and provider roster, see Shopify’s Buy Now Pay Later explainer:

  • Tabby—splits into 4 interest-free payments; merchant gets paid upfront
  • Tamara — Sharia-compliant option, also 4 installments

You’ll pay more in processing fees than a US merchant does (Shopify’s 0.5–2% additional transaction fee stacks on top), but the conversion lift from offering local payment methods is worth it.

How MAQ UAE Approaches This for Clients

MAQ Computer Services LLC is a Dubai-based Shopify agency; the question we get most often from UAE merchants is some flavor of the following:

“Can I just turn on Shopify Payments and be done?”

And the honest answer through most of the last decade was:

“No, here’s the gateway stack instead.”

That’s finally shifting. For our Shopify Plus clients, we’re now running end-to-end UAE onboarding: trade license check, bank account verification, Shopify Payments activation, Shop Pay + Shop Pay Installments enablement, and testing. For non-Plus clients we still spec a Telr + BNPL stack that handles 95% of UAE checkout expectations paired with our store setup and design & build services so the launch runs clean.

If you’re not sure which side of the rollout you’re on, MAQ can map it out for free. You can also see what we’ve already shipped in our case study of Shopify stores in the UAE.

FAQ

Is Shop Pay available in the UAE?

Yes, for Shopify Plus merchants who have been approved for the UAE early-access program. Not yet for Basic, Shopify, or Advanced plans. For the official country-level availability, see the Shopify UAE Payments page on shopify.com.

Is Shopify Pay the same as Shop Pay?

Same product. The branding changed from “Shopify Pay” to “Shop Pay” in 2017, but people still use both terms. Same one-click checkout.

Can I use Shop Pay without Shopify Payments?

No. Shop Pay is built on top of Shopify Payments. If your store runs on a third-party gateway, Shop Pay won’t appear at checkout, regardless of your theme.

Is there a workaround for Shop Pay on a Basic or Shopify plan?

Not directly. The closest alternatives are Apple Pay (works through your third-party gateway), Shopify’s accelerated checkout for logged-in customers (separate feature), or BNPL via Tabby/Tamara for high-AOV categories.

Do I need a UAE trade license to use any payment gateway?

Yes, for most. Telr, PayTabs, Stripe, and Checkout.com all require a valid UAE business license and a corporate bank account. 2Checkout/Verifone is one of the few that doesn’t. (A full license walkthrough is in our Shopify UAE trade license guide.)

Will Shopify Payments open to non-Plus plans in the UAE?

Most likely yes; the early-access model Shopify used in every other market has consistently rolled out to all plans within 9 – 18 months. We expect advanced plan access by the end of 2026 and basic by mid-2027.

Does this affect COD (Cash on Delivery)?

No. COD is a separate manual payment method in Shopify and is unaffected by any of this. You can still enable COD alongside any of the gateways above.
